“SING FOR JOY” Spring Concert
Sunday, March 16, 2008 ~ 4:00pm
First United Methodist Church
1500 N. Water Street, Owosso, MI
No Admission Charge
The Shiawassee Youth Chorale announces the 5th annual “Sing for Joy” spring concert to be held on Sunday, March 16, 2008 at 4:00pm at the First United Methodist Church in Owosso, at 1500 N. Water Street. No tickets will be required for this concert. “We’re hoping for a full house,” according to Director Marsha Lyttle. “Our Christmas concert, which is always a free will donation concert, was a packed house. We decided we didn’t want the cost of a ticket to get in the way of people being amazed and delighted by this talented group of 8-14 year olds from Shiawassee County and beyond, and we’re hoping for another packed house.” Owosso First United Methodist Church can seat over 500 and has some of the best acoustics for music in the Midwest.
The “Sing for Joy” concert is the culmination of only 8 weeks of Sunday afternoon rehearsals for twenty-seven youngsters. The “Sing for Joy” concert will feature a variety of sacred, contemporary, and popular music selections including a “Lion King” medley and a Harry Belafonte piece “Turn the World Around” accompanied by a conga drum played by Owosso High School student Jon Coffey. The concert will also feature solos by several of the “senior” members who will be graduating out of the choir this academic year.
A unique feature of the 2008 concert is that all former members of the SYC will receive a personal invitation to attend the March 16 concert, and be invited at the end to come up and sing along with the SYC’s traditional
closing piece, John Rutter’s “The Lord Bless You and Keep You.” Some of the earliest members of the SYC are now in college and high school.
The Shiawassee Youth Chorale is a community-based, select choral
ensemble that provides talented 8-14 year old singers with an advanced choral experience in addition to supplementing and enhancing school
music education. The Chorale rehearses October through December and January through March, with two major concerts each year in addition to other performances by invitation. Auditions for the 2008-09 year will be held in May and September. For more information about auditions or the Chorale, contact the Director at 989-725-6356.
