10-3-08:  Program suspended for fall 2008

A decision has been made to suspend the Shiawassee Youth Chorale program fall 2008 due to an insufficient number of participants.  According to director Marsha Lyttle, “We headed into this fall season with a very small core from last spring after graduating eight members, and although the preferred minimum number is 30, we had decided we’d go forward and rebuild if we had at least 20.  Even after recent auditions, we have less than 20 who have enrolled or verbally committed to participate.  Letters informing parents were mailed on Friday, October 3.

As stated in the letter, “It’s a matter of ‘critical mass’ and economics.  With this age group, we have to take care not to strain developing voices, and we just plain need mass to drive the learning process, support sound production, and create an advanced, high level music experience for participants (the SYC mission).  SYC competes with the many extra-curricular school, sports and church activities that fill a busy young life.  On the financial side, we try to keep tuition low for students and their parents, we operate on a shoestring budget, and we offer scholarships to anyone who is musically eligible.  Fewer students, more scholarships, and the challenge of raising sponsor dollars in these tough economic times all contributed to this decision.”

Director Lyttle suggests to current members and all other youth age 8 to 14 who love to sing, to keep singing and hope that with recruiting and more auditions between now and January, the SYC will fire up again for the second half of the 2008-09 choir season.

Change in Rehearsal Day and Time

All future rehearsals for the Shiawassee Youth Chorale will take place on Wednesday afternoons from 4:00 to 5:3pm at First United Methodist Church choir room.  There will still be one Saturday morning dress rehearsal the day before a concert, but no more Sunday afternoon rehearsals.
