HOW CAN A STUDENT BECOME A MEMBER?

     To become a member of the Shiawassee Youth Chorale, any southeastern Michigan youth who is at least 8 years old up through age 14 may audition.  Auditions are held to fill any vacancies in the Chorale, some that may be created when students either graduate out or elect not to continue membership.  Consequently, there will be a limited number of places available each year. 

 

HOW DO WE FIND OUT ABOUT AUDITIONS?

     Open auditions are announced in regional newspapers and media.  Or you may contact the director at any time during the year and you will be contacted when the next audition date is finalized.  Auditions are usually held in May and early September for the annual program season beginning in October.  Any parent, family members or a music teacher (school, church, or private) can request an audition for a child.  The Chorale seeks students who have exceptional vocal/musical ability.  Neither a teacher recommendation or an audition appointment guarantee a student’s membership in the Chorale. 

 

HOW DO WE SCHEDULE AN AUDITION?

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THE AUDITION?

     Auditions are held with the director, one child at a time, and take about 10 minutes.  As part of the audition each child will be asked to listen and repeat back a 5-note melodic pattern and a rhythmic pattern.  Each child should also be prepared to sing a short song of his or her choice, a cappella (without accompaniment). One verse of a familiar hymn or simple song is preferred. 

 

 WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE AUDITION?

     Students will be notified concerning their eligibility for membership.  Those who are

accepted for membership will be provided with an Enrollment Form and the SYC Membership Handbook.  Selection for the Chorale, and the total number of placements in the Chorale each year, are at the discretion of the Director. 

 

WHAT DOES MEMBERSHIP INVOLVE?

     The Shiawassee Youth Chorale is active from October through April and performs two major concerts a year as well as special performances by request.  The Chorale practices 2 hours every week for 8 weeks prior to each major concert.  Participation in the Chorale is structured by a written set of guidelines that establish requirements and expectations for

attendance, behavior, and participation for students and parents.  Selection for the Youth Chorale is an honor and an achievement and requires strong support and commitment from students and their parents.
