1. MEMBERSHIP HANDBOOK. Participation in the SYC is structured by this written set of guidelines that establish requirements and expectations for attendance, behavior and participation for students and their parents. If haven’t received a copy or need another one, please ask.
2. ATTENDANCE & HOMEWORK. The SYC sessions have been shortened to 8 weeks of preparation for each concert. That means students MUST be learning their concert songs at home using the practice tapes and music. It also means it is VERY IMPORTANT that students attend rehearsals unless there is a significant, compelling reason they are unable to attend. Please contact the Director about an absence -- in advance whenever possible or immediately after the missed rehearsal. With a shorter practice season, any student who misses three or more rehearsals may be asked to demonstrate to the director his or her music mastery in order to participate in a concert and remain a member of the Chorale.
3. SPONSOR DEVELOPMENT. One of the organizational expectations is that every family will find at least one donor or sponsor for the SYC each year. You have been provided with information and materials to develop sponsors through your friends, family, and business associates. As a nonprofit organization, the SYC depends heavily on financial support from grants and sponsorships to keep tuition low, to offer scholarships, and to achieve its overall mission of providing a private opportunity for musical expression.
4. VOLUNTEERS & SNACKS. Parents are expected to support the organization by volunteering to help with concerts and by providing weekly rehearsal snacks once or twice a year. If you haven’t filled out a volunteer form, please do so and give it to the director. Snack duty is assigned – if you are absent or unable to provide snacks on your assigned date, please make arrangements to trade with someone else. Roster will be provided (good for carpooling, too).

5. AWARDS & REWARDS: Students earn “Notes” for PERFECT ATTENDANCE during a session and for completing and turning in their homework assignments on time (must be signed by parent or guardian). Notes are as good as cash for students to purchase novelty items at the annual awards banquet. In addition, students earn a choir medal after completing 2 full sessions of participation. For every additional year (2 sessions), students earn a gold star pin to add to their medal ribbon.
5. TUITION: Student tuition for the year is $150, due in full by the end of November unless payment arrangements have been made with the Director. The tuition may be divided into 2 to 6 equal weekly payments if that is more convenient for you. Checks are payable to THE SHIAWASSEE YOUTH CHORALE, INC. Give to the director or mail to: SYC Director, 624 N. Saginaw Street, Owosso, MI 48867. A 20% discount is available for families who have more than one child enrolled. Tuition payments are expected without recurring invoices or reminders.
6. PLEASE STAY INFORMED: To keep you informed on what’s happening, and quite often there are SCHEDULE CHANGES or IMPORTANT NOTICES you need to know, you will receive a “News and Notes” weekly newsletter, sent home from rehearsal with your child. In addition, the SYC maintains a website at www.shiayouthchorale.org. The website is updated regularly and includes a “Members” page for information important to parents. There’s an e-mail link to the Director as well.
